MSB-01 Daedalus
Thanks to MrVaultech for getting the vehicle moving.
The MSB-01 Daedalus is a large landship designed to support large numbers of armoured units on operations in the Sahara Desert. At fifty metres long, the vehicle is much larger than any previous armoured fighting vehicle ever built.
Controls
AG1+TRIM+VTOL operates the left 57mm cannon.
AG2+TRIM+VTOL operates the right 57mm cannon.
AG3+TRIM+VTOL operates the left 120mm cannon.
AG4+TRIM+VTOL operates the right 120mm cannon.
AG5+TRIM+VTOL operates the left 15mm autocannon.
AG6+TRIM+VTOL operates the right 15mm autocannon.
AG7+AG8+TRIM+VTOL for track adjustment controls.
PITCH+ROLL for movement.
MSB-01 Daedalus
The Daedalus is a landship developed by a consortium of BAe Systems, Rheinmetall-OST and General Dynamics UK. The vehicle is capable of supporting a full Fire Support Squadron of eight vehicles in the desert for up to four months, and features a number of innovations in order to make it a viable asset for the Saltwater Army.
The enormous size of the Daedalus enables it to accommodate many different support roles into one unit. For example, the vehicle features a fully equipped eight-bed hospital ward in the starboard superstructure and has a large garage with a capacity of six main battle tanks or ten MRAPs.
Garage Area
The rear-most compartment takes up most of the space below the heli-pad, and can hold up to six main battle tanks or ten smaller vehicles. Accessed by a folding ramp, it allows tank crews to rest whilst on the move and has full maintenance facilities on board. Just forward of the garage on the portside is a fuel dump, permitting refuelling of the embarked vehicles. On the starboard-side is an ammunition store, permitting rearming as well.
Crew Quarters
Above fuel dump and ammunition storage space are the crew quarters. This area can accommodate up to forty people, although twenty is more normal. Also in this space is a kitchen area to provide food for the crew of thirty.
Operations Room
Above the crew quarters but below the bridge is the operations room. Here the battle management staff are able to coordinate the movements of the embarked vehicles and process incoming data from the large SDRSR Longlance search radar. This is also the area where the primary weapons systems are controlled. These include the 57mm anti-aircraft guns, 15mm RCWS and Sea Ceptor surface to air missiles.
Large bulletproof windows are mounted on the forward wall of the operations room, offering excellent views across the surrounding desert.
Hospital
Directly behind the crew quarters is an eight-bed hospital ward with a small operating theatre. Here a six-person surgical team can deal with injuries ranging from decaying teeth to gunshot wounds. There is a door on the rear wall which opens out directly on to the heli-pad for usage during MEDEVAC scenarios.
Bridge
At the very top of the Daedalus is the enclosed bridge. Here the commander and his staff control the Daedalus itself and coordinate helicopter operations. An advanced communications suite is fitted, permitting effective communication during the most intense of sandstorms and jamming environments. A dozen touch-screen displays control the electrical systems throughout the vehicle.
Heli-Pad and Maintenance Hanger
The large heli-pad is capable of accommodating helicopters up to the size of an AW.101 Merlin, and allows for aerial resupply by helicopter during the long desert patrols.
A small hanger space is present in the rear superstructure. Although it cannot fit an entire helicopter it does allow for routine maintenance to be carried out should the need arise. During day-to-day operations it can be utilised as a crew rest area or for accommodation for the crews of the embarked armour.
Defensive Equipment
With its great size and relatively slow speed the Daedalus is highly vulnerable to air attack without effective air defences. The first tier of defences comes in the form of forty-eight Sea Ceptor surface to air missiles. These agile short-range weapons are capable of all-weather interception of incoming aircraft and missiles. Should a threat get through, two aft-mounted 57mm anti-aircraft guns, guided by radar, can fire up to 220 high explosive rounds per minute at an aircraft or incoming missile.
For dealing with ground threats, two 120mm anti-tank guns are mounted in sponsons on either side of the vehicle. These smoothbore cannons are crew-served, but nonetheless have a rate of fire of ten rounds per minute. Two 15mm autocannon in RCWS mounts are also fitted aft of the heli-pad for combating soft targets.
Versatility & Usage
The MSB-01 Daedalus is designed as a patrol vehicle for use in the Sahara Desert, supporting shorter-ranged armoured units. As well as this role, the Daedalus is able to serve as a mobile surface-to-air missile site, a field hospital, command and control facility and more. With a maximum speed of just 23 miles per hour, the Daedalus is not fast, but then it doesn't need to be with its heavy firepower and accompanying armoured vehicles.
Armour Protection
Due to its large size, it is impractical to armour the entire vehicle. Instead, Chobham armour has been fitted around key areas such as the engine, fuel tanks, ammunition stores and the operations room. Colossal NERA plates are fitted on the front and sides of the superstructure.
Engine and Tracks
Power comes from two 14,000 horsepower marine turbines mounted low in the chassis between the tracks, enabling the 743-ton vehicle to move at speeds of up to 23 miles per hour (in-game speed twice this). Three sets of powered tracks are positioned on either side of the vehicle and a seventh support track is fitted inside the central hull. This gives good weight distribution for moving across the desert sands.
