The H10-44 was the first switcher produced by Fairbanks Morse, and sold relatively well. It was introduced in 1944, with a cycle 38D8 1/8 opposed-piston engine making 1,000hp. It was later succeeded by the H12-44, which was more reliable. Companies favored the H10's and H12's because they were more capable and durable, compared to ALCo and Baldwin.
