Ilyushin Il-28
Soviet jet bomber
The Ilyushin Il-28 is a jet bomber originally built for the Soviet Air Force and the first of its type to enter serial production in the Soviet Union. It was also built under license in China as the Hong H-5. The NATO reporting name for the aircraft was Beagle for the bomber, Il-28R for the reconnaissance version, Il-28T for the torpedo bomber, and Mascot for the Il-28U trainer. Estimates place the total number of aircraft built in both countries at between 2,000 and 6,000. In the 1990s, hundreds remained in service with various air forces, more than 40 years after the Il-28 first appeared.
The aircraft had a conventional exterior, with a high, unswept wing carrying a large engine underneath. The bomber pilot sat in the glass nose, with two 23mm cannons in the tail. These features were similar to the layout of earlier World War II medium bombers, but the swept rear surfaces and the pilot's floating glass cockpit and ejection seat were similar to other aircraft of its era, making it both new and old.
Have fun!
