GP 14 dinghy

15.4k Reuben201103  4.6 years ago

I got a little bored of planes so here’s this

Overview

The GP14 is a popular sailing dinghy, with well over 14,000 built.
The class is active in the UK, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and parts of north-eastern USA, and the GP 14 can be used for both racing and cruising.

The GP14 was designed by Jack Holt in 1949, with the assistance of the Dovey Yacht Club in Aberdyfi. The concept behind the design was to provide an inexpensive and accessible family dingy which could be towed behind a small family car and operated with a crew of two, it was intended to be either sailed or rowed or even powered by a small outboard motor.

Design and manufacture

Design

The dinghy is a simple monohull with a single centreboard which is lowed for sailing to increase stability (see above) and raised for landing and towing, it was initially designed to be rigged with a mainsail and relatively small Jib (triangular foresail) as shown on this example but was later rigged with a full racing rig of mainsail, Genoa and spinnaker.

Manufacture

The image above shows an original advertising booklet for Bell Woodworking Co. Ltd., the dinghy was designed to allow it to be home built by amateurs, by carpenters or by professional boatbuilders initially with a wooden hull, which later became plastic and then eventually fibreglass.

Personal Note

This is based off of my own dinghy with the sail number 3356 matching my own as well as hull colour and gloss varnish, the dinghy is currently being restored from a state of somewhat neglect by the previous owner and I have not yet gotten to sail it.

You will need at least some knowledge of sailing to operate this so please comment if you would like me to explain

Controls

VTOL up- loosen jib
Yaw- well…Yaw
Roll- swings the boom
Trim- rudder trim
Landing gear- Raise centreboard

Last night I had the strangest dream
    I sailed away to China
In a little row boat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry cleaned
Didn't want no one to hold you
    What does that mean ?
    And you said

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on movin'
Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I got to keep on movin'

You're on the road and now you pray it lasts
    The road behind was rocky
    But now you're feeling cocky
You look at me and you see your past
Is that the reason why you're runnin' so fast ?
    And she said

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I got to keep on moving

Never let another girl like you work me over
Never let another girl like you drag me under
If I meet another girl like you, I will tell her
Never want another girl like you, have to say, oh !

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    Nobody gonna slow me down
Oh no, oh no, I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I got to keep on movin'

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    Nobody gonna slow me down
Oh no, oh no, I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I got to keep on movin'

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    Nobody gonna slow me down
Oh no, I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
    I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I got to keep on movin'

Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down, oh no

Awesome! Very functional, even though I don't know what most of the things do. I kinda need a tutorial lmao

Great job, I did the dayskipper course years back and always just wanted a dinghy/trailer-sailor to potter about in.

This is really fun to sail! I managed to get to 40 kts in only 15 kts if wind!
Although this one of the best sailing boats I’ve seen here, I do have a couple of niggles:
    1. It slips sideways a bit much, especially when sailing at low speeds. Fluid dynamics don’t exist in SP so you need to add way more wing with below water stuff.
    2. The mast could swing around a bit more. The stiffness of it makes tracking kinda annoying... though I really enjoy how you made it move. Maybe you could have used a winch with the same input to move the sail.
