How to Play Chess

  1. Enter the game and switch to Auto Camera.
  2. Click the "Auto Timing" red button in the center of the clock to start the game. (Ignore it if you want to use the chess clock manually.)
  3. Click a piece of your side and then click the target grid to move the piece (you must follow the rules, or the piece will not move); click on your opponent's piece to capture it.
  4. If you misclick or want to takeback, press the right board edge to activate the options bar, click the undo button (or AG2) to cancel your last move, or press the edit mode button (or AG3) to freeze the game and move the pieces to your desired positions.
  5. After finishing the game, press AG8 twice to restore all pieces to the initial position and start your new round!

Introduction

After a whole month's work and countless tests, here I present you: The first fully working chess set in the world of Simple Planes!

Some features:

  • A fully working Staunton-style chess set, with two 2 extra queens for promotion use! The size of the chess set is made according to FIDE rules (made in 5:1 scale to ensure the good visual quality)!
  • A fully working, simple-to-use analog chess clock (How to use?).
  • All special moves in one click! (See instructions for details.)
  • All pieces have move restrictions to prevent misclicking.
  • Undo your last move in one click.
  • Simi-working score sheets with fully animated pencils.
  • A flyable table and two (un)foldable chairs.
  • The King can be tipped over.
  • And it is mobile-friendly.

Full Instructions

  • AG1: Automatic Timing (Automatically switch sides after you make a move.)
  • AG2: Undo Last Move (Can not undo multiple steps! Can not undo if have selected any piece after making a move.)
  • AG3: Edit Mode / Pause Timing (No Special Moves and Restrictions)
  • AG4: Remove Active Piece
  • AG5: Disable Moving Restrictions
  • AG6: Disable Pen Animation (if you want to record steps manually)
  • AG7: Lock Auto Camera Position
  • AG8: Reset Clock & Restart Game
  • Touch Clock Face / Fire Guns: Toggle Clock
  • Left Board Edge: Check / Set Time
  • Right Board Edge: More Options
  • Inner Board Edge: Toggle Clock (in Auto Camera Mode)
  • Roll: Set Time Precisely
  • Pitch: Set Time Roughly
  • Yaw: Set Time Gap / Look around
  • Special Moves: To do en passant, just capture the opponent's pawn; To do castling, first select your king, then your rook (make sure you follow castling rules); Promotion is fully automatic if you have queens available.

Some Tips

  • It is highly recommended to use Auto Camera.
  • If you are on PC, press space bar to switch sides quickly. You can also click the inner board edge to switch sides.
  • Don't panic if you misclick, just press AG2 or click the undo button in the options bar.
  • Edit mode also pauses the game. You can do whatever you want in edit mode, no rules! You can also press AG5 to disable moving rules.
  • If you don't want auto camera's rotation, you can use the lock camera option (in the options bar or press AG7) to lock it on your preferred side. You can also change the second value in the variable setter (AutoRotate) to switch it off for good.
  • Due to performance limitations, the score sheet does not record detailed steps, but you can still see how many moves you have made.
  • The pen animation is annoying you? Press AG6 to disable it!
  • When you start the game, the clock is set for a 10-minute match by default. You can change this by editing the first value in variable setters.
  • If you are under attack, stay calm. The table is equipped with flare dispensers.

Absolutely mind blowing to turn an airplane game into a chess game, let alone all the incredible details like the auto camera and even an animated pencil! The community never ceases to amaze me with what’s possible. Fantastic job!

Theoretically, we could integrate AI into this build. Here's my idea:
Develop a standalone program that uses visual recognition as input to analyze the board. The input would then be sent to a chess engine like Stockfish for decision-making.
For output, the program could control the mouse to move and click the pieces accordingly.
However, this is currently beyond my ability. It would be fantastic if someone with the skills and interests could create a program like this!

    hello, @whills.

exactly a year ago, I had an idea to implement chess into SP with text variables and in-game buttons. With help from game devs, I added move after move after move of each piece for three months. I faced problems and barely fixed it. It was until the 3rd week of may that i stopped all of my sh*t because a friend of mine simply said "isn't there endless moves in chess?".

and somehow you managed to make my dream come true. this piece truly means alot to me. i shed a tear playing w this piece of your's. thank you so much, god bless @whills.

edit: it felt like i'm on a horse holding a lantern when i spread the word that someone had finally done it lol
