The M39 Mastodon is a main battle tank developed by Maxwell in the 1990s for the Amterican Army. The tank first entered service in 1992 and succeeded the M20 Mammoth as the main battle tank of the Amterican Army. It is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore cannon, and is powered by a gas turbine engine. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Amteric and 12 other nations. The Mastodon was used in Iraq with the Amterican Army, and has seen action in Afghanistan with the Dutch, Norsk and Estonian ground forces.
This particular vehicle is an M39A2 Mastodon that belongs to the 9th Armored Divison, III Corps, and has seen action in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is equipped with a 3rd-generation tank survival kit.
The M39A2 is armed with a M230 125mm smoothbore cannon, a coaxial 7.62x51mm M91, a 12.7x99mm M312, and a 40mm M42 Automatic Grenade Launcher. The tank survival kit includes ERA tiles, and the Protector II APS. This particular vehicle is equipped with a M1132 mine plow for mine clearing.
The M39 is protected by the Chobham II+ composite armor. It features composite armor on the frontal and side aspect of the hull, as well as on the turret. In addition to this, the Mk47A ERA protects the front and sides of the hull. The Protector APS is capable of protecting the tank from guided munitions, mortar shells, and tank rounds to a certain degree.
It is powered by a single AGT1700 gas turbine engine that produces 1,700 horsepower. As such, the M39 is capable of reaching speeds up to 43 mph (70 km/h).
