M5A "Scutum" Infantry Tank

25.2k Panzerwaifu69  2.5 years ago

Hello There, I’m back with a tank again
Yes, I know I said i'll post it next week. I decide to finish this earlier so I have more time to build my next projects.
Inspired by Al-Hatay Heavy Tank from Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, introducing:

M5A “Scutum” Infantry Tank

Fictional History

M5A “Scutum”, Or “Shield” in English, was an heavy infantry tank deigned by Obelia Empire in 1937 and produced in 1939 and used until the end of war in 1945.

After major infantry losses in First World War, the empire believed that the infantry doesn’t have any cover once they left their trenches. So they decide to make a tank that strong and armored to cover and support their infantry.

M5A designed and presented in interwar period in 1937. The design still influenced by the first World War but with newer and better technologies. The design revised 5 times until finally accepted and went into production in 1939. It’s longer than most tank in that year, it made longer to pass trenches and as a place for infantries as extra firepower, Its also big enough to cover a whole platoon of infantry across a storm of bullets. M5 is big, bulky and heavy, but it comes with heavy armor and powerfull armanents. It weighted around 45 tonnes, with width around 5m, lenght around 10m, and height around 5m. It powered with Y16 Diesel Engine, producing around 800 HP, but it’s speed is limited to 25kmph to match the infantry’s march. The armor is around 125mm-55mm inches, thick enough to hold most AT Gun in that year. M5A armed with two 5cm guns, placed in sponson as AT gun to destroy armored targets. A newly developed 90mm gun placed in the main turret to attack fortified position such as bunkers and trenches. As anti-infantry weapon, 2x 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun placed in a small turret beside the drivers, and 3x 7.62mm Machine Gun, 2 on side, 1 as coaxial MG. However, it has few weakpoints. The backside of the tank isn’t armed and pretty lightly armored, without infantries, this tank is only a sitting duck for enemy. The enormous silhuette made it an easy target for plane and bomber, it also limit tank’s movement in urban area.

Only 800 tanks produced from 1939 to 1940, 400 tanks modified into M5G Assault Gun with 150mm Long Range Artillery, 200 tanks modified as M5F with flamethrower on both sponson gun, and 50 tanks modified as M5C Command Tank with improved comms equipments. The production stopped in favor of other heavy tanks.
