@AaronRodgers Due to poor weather conditions (mainly heavy rain and strong tailwind) and the pilot's actions, the aircraft passed the runway threshold at an excessive height, and the wheels only actually touched the ground at about 1 200 m from this threshold for a 2,700 m long runway. It therefore only has 1,500 m left to stop, which is not enough for such an aircraft, particularly on a runway covered with approximately 6 to 7 mm of water3.
Although the crew immediately applied the brakes, the thrust reversers were not activated until about twelve seconds after touchdown. Due to this imperfect braking and its late touchdown, the aircraft left the end of the runway at 80 knots (approximately 150 km/h) then ended its journey in a ditch, 200 m from the end of the runway, after having hit concrete pylons which opened gaps under the wings and caused a fire. The cabin crew reacted quickly and applied the emergency evacuation procedure. All passengers were evacuated in less than 2 minutes, there were 43 injured, including the captain, Alain Rosaye, the only one to be seriously injured. Around four minutes later, the A340 burst into flames and the fuselage was quickly destroyed by fire3.

Debris from the plane after the crash
The following flights to Toronto were diverted to other Canadian airports (Ottawa, London (Ontario), Hamilton, Montreal and Winnipeg4) and American airports (Syracuse5 and Buffalo). Flights from Vancouver had to turn around.
