@Destroyerz117 You're welcome! I haven't made many experiments with the new parts though I'm as thrilled as the next person to have customizable wheels and suspension. The hinge joint and trim option for controls was an absolute game changer! Naturally they made these changes when I was ALMOST finished with my first ship. It lagged so bad anyway, the RP for it had ended, and I wound up not releasing it. Working on a successor though for my current RP with General360's alternate WW2 story line. We need one more rudimentary tool to work with in the game; Cable/Chain/Rope/Belts and the Pulley - plus a way to mount props with this system in place so that it can drive underwater propellers.
@SteadfastContracting The first time I found it it startled me and freaked my son out with the whispers. As I listened closely, I could SWEAR I hear the words "Simple Planes" amongst the words but I couldn't make out anything else with the echo effect. lol I took a ship loaded up with lots of miniguns and 4 Boom-50s in two turrets and attacked the Kraken. Needless to say it didn't phase him. I have a screen shot around here somewhere of my ship limping away after getting severely damaged by a collision with one of his tentacles. lol
@foxythegamer12 I wonder what causes this? I noticed that one of the builders for the Soviet Union in that alternate WW2 RP build that General360 runs, I think his name was Redlord, similarly could not be accessed. You can see his page in search but click on his name and it sends you to the home page.
@TheOwlAce I appreciate the offer but in the RP I'm in right now Germany has gone full bore with jets. We're up to the BFE150 already in use and shared with the other axis countries including Finland. With this beaute having 1,000 H.P., 4 12.7 mm guns, the strange asymmetrical horizontal stabilizers and biplane planform I can only think of three roles - of which Finland presently only utilizes two of that it would fit into; 1. Pilot trainer. 2. Close-Air-Support. 3. Night Harrassment. As the Soviet Union has been almost completely crushed and Finland maintaining a wait-and-see policy regarding the Canadians invading Norway - they don't have a use for the third in that list yet. ;-) Besides, do you know how much customs cost to import stuff from other dimensions?! The prices are absurd! XD
@TheOwlAce Sorry, it's been a busy past couple of days. Yesterday I got some building in though and will be posting them soon. ^^ I'll test out the revised Graf ASAP though!! ^^
@TheOwlAce There were a couple of issues but its hard for me to offer advice when I haven't even tried to make an airship of my own, but you wanted my thoughts on her so I'll try anyway.
Appearance wise it was a little hard to think of her as a ship as she more looked like an extremely short flying airstrip OR a rather large flying wing with limited control. VERY steam-punk-ish. It has a different feel overall from your' previous flying ships but that's beside the point. This lady was designed to carry aircraft from point A to point B via air and launch fighters.
After downloading her I took a good look at her in my hangar. One issue I saw in there, that would later turn up in flight was, an off-center, center of balance. The Center of Thrust is always approximate when multiple power plants are put in with different configurations but the center of lift is always a good guidemark as its a major consideration for how the game engine interprets flight. I also noted that the engines meant to provide some level of pitch, via VTOL slider control, are mounted about a third of the way down its length. Just with the angle of the mounting beam I can tell you were trying to get these six T1000s as far forward as you could. It was a valiant effort but didn't quite work out in the end, I just don't think they quite have enough power to get the Graf to nose up on the ground. That turned up during flight tests as well. With nudging now at your' command, T2000s can be nudged in together too which would provide them with a lot more power. It would likely pull the center of gravity further forward though so I've no idea what it'd do to the flight characteristics of an airship. I also saw that she carried 4k gallons of fuel. Not bad for an inter-continental bomber but probably a pretty limited amount with an airship powered by what is it, 18 T1000s?
I went on ahead to take off from South Airfield on the Wright Islands. Knowing I had no elevators I tilted the props to about a 45 degree down-angle and throttled up. She quickly picked up speed but immediately began to yaw to starboard - not quickly or abruptly but the pull was noticable as by the end of the runway the wheels on the far starboard side were off of the runway. I pitched the props further down to try to get the ship to lift off but still to no avail. This is pretty unsurprising though if you consider that 18 engines altogether provide 0.262 HP/Weight - a third of them only amounts to a 0.0873 HP/Weight ratio. Given the large number of landing gear keeping her from tipping or anything though she continued accelerating on the greens right up to a small cliff. It was there that the Graf finally grabbed the air. I didn't dare pull up the landing gear because the little birds would need theirs to take off. I finally got up to about a mile in altitude playing with the tilt rotors however I noticed something important. The airbreaks on the fighters were reacting to the VTOL input.
As anticipated she had a tendency to bank to starboard. Yaw helped some with that - plus a bit of panicking and button mashing the "A" key out of sheer habit so the little birds might have been helping with their own ailerons but I don't know they're awfully small to effect such a large mass. lol
I switched to Camera 1 and activated AG1. I'm not sure if my recent setting of the tilt rotors had caused it or if the sudden activation of 2,000 more HP caused her to nose up. Either way, I fiddled with the tilt rotors to bring the bow down a bit more. With a mere 10 degrees above the horizon, I activated AG2 - which caused the first fighter instead of going forward to slide backwards through the other two fighters, not as in destroying them but passing through them. I was perplexed as the camera didn't stay on the aircraft, let alone what I'd just seen. (It was then that I realized Camera 1 was not for that aircraft it was an orbital camera on the starboard side of the strip.)
Again I had to adjust the pitch given the change in the center of gravity and correct for the roll to starboard through yaw and tilt-rotor control which took some time. I managed to finally get the horizon level and decided to switch to camera 3, punched AG3 and after several seconds AG4 and smoothly lifted off with virtually no roll on the "strip". After all the airship was moving faster than the little Ju-122B-2's stall speed. lol I was also interested in checking out this new version of the Ju-122. As I recall I think the predecessor had some control issues - namely going into a strange stall and flat spin. I jinked, barrel rolled, looped, climbed and dived for about a minute after take off. I was really impressed - you'd fixed all of her stability issues. Sixty seconds was too long though as I'd just taken the weight of the center-most fighter off of the Graf and left her at 7,500 feet or so. I hadn't been watching my instrumentation and was just getting a feel for the fighter. By the time I switched back the Graf was a couple of hundred feet underwater. All I can think is that with the release of the mass of the central fighter which left more weight in the aft, the tilt-rotors in combination with the increased mass caused it to loop or at the very least stall out. That isn't a design flaw though, I should have thought about it, so it was a bit of cranial flatulance on the part of this tunnel-visioned video gamer pilot. lol
I play on a mediocre HP laptop. I don't know its stats off hand but it handles 1,000 plus part builds with a good bit of lag and it meets the criteria for my once in a blue moon play on Mabinogi. (It's the closest free game I could find to my old video game fix, FFXI, okay?! lol) Ahem - I digress. All the engines on the Graf though gave it immense lag. Even after the Graf dived into the drink and I was rolling in that new hostile, agile and wicked lil Junkers - it looked like the belly and canopy side were just switching places from frame to frame. (If I had turned down my resolution that might have fixed that too though.)
Ideas to chew on for a new Graf; 1. Find a way to get the lil birds along the center of mass, though I have no advice on how, that would correct for that issue short of overhead gantries attached to both sides with a centrally located detacher. 2. Add in some props that are set up for Trim control that rotate in opposite directions to give it some capabilities to roll. 3. Use AG 8 for some elevator trim, like you used to do with your' larger birds. Then you just turn off AG8 when you don't need it. Trim props would be just like the VTOL props only while one side tilts down the other would tilt up - there's no need for an AG to disable them. 4. Finally, although it would make the naval Ju-122s a bit scary to land, take off the air breaks and add an equal amount of weight where they are mounted to keep the flight dynamics about the same. (If it has an effect at all.) as VTOL controls caused them to deploy. If not removing them - switch them back to "Brake" for control.
Overall though, once again I'm struck with the sheer ingenius idea of building a flying carrier the way that you have here. There are some control issues but it was a success for launching an aircraft from over a mile in altitude. I'm amazed this thing could take flight without roll or pitch control surfaces to begin with. I am humbled at viewing your' mad scientist skills. lol
Oh, one other comment .. since Das Germanishe Weltreich has nuclear weapons and, presumably, nuclear power - why not DL an "unlimited" fuel tank and start using these on your' airships? I have two of them in my subassemblies. One has a couple of million gallons of fuel and another that has over 500 million. I have yet to figure out WHY anyone would need that much fuel though. XD
@TheOwlAce The fellow mentioned in my previous post made this request yesterday but I was out of the house all day with my daughter's graduation and after party. ^_^
@LouisEP It was refreshing to see someone thinking about making a fighter that bristles like a porcupine with gunfire. Check my SILK-234 Sinitaivus Linna (Sky Castle), a fictional warbird I built a little too late for the RP it was meant to be in. I think you'll appreciate its excessive armaments and heavy bomb load. lol
@villulennuk Sure, no problem. ^_^ It's been a long day though so I'll tag you once I put it together tomorrow. I'll try to make a variety of sizes and a couple of sizes of fin flash; Though from what I can see of Estonian aircraft typically they painted the rudders in the colors of the flag which is difficult to reproduce in SimplePlanes without using 3 separate Vertical Stabilizers on top of one another with the rudders painted in the colors of the flag. (The L-39C though has a real colorful and fanciful display for its tail colors, afraid I can't help there.)
I am also curious, what is the coding to add greater reflectivity to gloss finishes? At the very least I'd like the mirrors on my ground vehicles to actually look like mirrors! XD
That landing gear is cherry sweet my friend, truly an inspiration! Maybe I ought to steal it for future builds?? I just tossed a bunch of the old immitation landing gear with the little duelies half hidden at the bottom from my subassemblies too! lol
@LouisEP Thanks! ^_^ @Pilotmario Nah, don't worry about it for now. I had a couple of minor ideas in mind but nothing set in stone. After the alternate WW2 RP I'm in is over I might come back and revisit the idea, thanks for the consideration though!!
I agree 100%. I get bored with straight flight sims, as well as games like WoT, etc. - but this one has the three basics that are essential; Interactive content (The forums, DL'able creations and chat,) allows creativity to run positively berserk and finally it allows you to play with the new toys you or others build and aren't limited in terms of most anything. There's still more I'd like to see - but overall I love what we have thus far and this is indeed my favorite game as well! ^_^
A question for @AndrewGarrison directly now though, can we look forward to any of the following;
Working Tank Treads
Flexible parts such as cable/wire/rope and pulleys
A system for custom painting, such as a simple skin option, maybe some basic markings options, etc.
Rocket engines that do not have an explosive warhead at the tip.
Screws (propellers) that can be linked to an engine above the waterline of a ship.
@Dredex Congrats! :-D I find driving on SP's easier with the WASD plus the break for controls rather than throttle and yaw for steering. After all, we don't memorize the gear shifting/RPMs (Throttle %) to establish a speed, we keep on the gas until we reach the speed we want and then coast until we need to give it a bit more gas. lol Besides, with pitch controlling the throttle, you get reverse too~
@TheOwlAce I haven't tried either of the Graf Zepplins though I had fun with some of your' other airships. I am curious though, when you maneuver in the fighter, doesn't that effect the control surfaces of the carrier too?
@Pilotmario lol What do you expect of a people who were under the thumb of the Swedes and then Imperial Russia; Only to be attacked by the Soviet Union after they finally gained independence? I'd go full out one winged angel on them too! lol Thanks for the upvote!
@TheOwlAce I look forward to seeing it! The RP I'm in now, the Soviet Union basically doesn't exist but there are remnants in the far North that Finland is engaged with. (Both of them being noteworthy militaries for having extensive experience in winter warfare.) However Australia, Canada and the US has managed to liberate most of the UK - as far as London as far as the last update. Thus I had to turn my focus away from ground vehicles back to aircraft to deal with them. I asked the person running the RP if I could station Whirlwind squadrons in Norway, Denmark and Northern France with Lightnings there to cover their take-offs and landings (The way that Galland's JV44 Me-262s were covered by red/white striped bellied Fw-190D-9s,) to cover each of the approaches to Finland by heavy bombers from the UK. I never got a yay or nay on the matter though. The bomber will be my contribution to, one try to ferret out the Soviet Remnants and force their surrender, and two, to serve as patrol bombers over the Baltic Sea, North Sea and Arctic Ocean. It's nothing like the Sky Castle I built for your' RP it'll be more like a cross-breed between a Ju-290 and a SAAB J.21 only with the props IN the booms. XD
@DragonAerotech I'm starting to run out of names for Finnish combat aircraft though. Their air industry had a rule of naming domestically produced aircraft after weather phenomenon. lol Somehow, drizzle, rain storm, or snow storm doesn't sound that imposing. I've built a Lightning, this one is Whirlwind and I'm working on a bomber that will be called Thunder. lol
@TheOwlAce Definitely, I asked for paint masks or an option to create "skins" in a prior posting but the new stuff they did introduce is pretty interesting too; Anyway thanks for the upvote! :-D
@TheOwlAce Its a revisit upon the Se Suomi Imperiumi Heavy Jet Fighter. When testing it out in its original incarnation I realized its lateral stability frankly ... sucked. Seemed like a drunken Irishman was flying the plane. So, since I'd already worked Heinkel into the story line, I started thinking of the He-280's twin tails and this is just kinda how it wound up. She's a BEAST of a bomber buster, especially really big ones like TheMasterSoldier's B-17G that at half a mile distance it fills your' crosshairs and you can lob bullets and rockets in at it at your' leisure for 1-2 second before you scream by. XD The guns are modded to have the same stats as the main guns of the Me-262 but without the explosives. If I knew how to calculate the how much energy was contained within the fixed amount of explosives and could then convert that into mass/velocity I'd like her a lot more. Though I'm fairly adept with math I'm too lazy to figure out the formula. lol
The wings were changed a bit, given wingtips, tail is all new, nose is circular and shorter, guns are staggered, engines/wing assemblies are moved forward, she has flaps/spoilers now, working trim on the tail though its inverted so the air brakes can be used on approach and landing, air brakes are linked to trim so while the trim/flaps hold it in a perfect landing configuration the air brakes can be turned on and off at will with a control group. Oh yes, and the air intakes are turned a quarter of the way around as that looked too futuristic for 1947 though I did have a reason for having them that way originally. (Muzzle exhaust choking the engine.) Nevermind the repaint and change in markings - though still from Finland! :-D I guess it'd be easier to say it was inspired by that build meant for your' RP. lol
@PhilipTarpley I think he already has, on one of my earliest builds I built after tearing down his old cargo biplane for pointers so now my plane is said to be a successor to his plane which was included in the starter package. ^_~ However this is some build!!
@General360 @MrSilverWolf Thanks! Ah, I forgot that non-steam users lack the ability to nudge. It amazes me that you can manage without it!! I look back at my builds from before I knew anything about it and think back on builds I threw against a bridge for not cooperating and I cringe remembering those days. Ah, so you found a way around nudging. An interesting concept, usually mirroring gets me into trouble with some unknown component or ten getting doubled or left out of the mirror for one reason or another. lol
I have a screen shot around here somewhere of my ship limping away after getting severely damaged by a collision with one of his tentacles. lol
Thank you kindly, @SteadfastContracting! :-)
@Destroyerz117 Oh okay, glad to hear it! :-D
Interesting concept and good application of the new tech introduced in the update! ^_^
Did anyone provide you with the resized insignia yet?
Thanks, @Destroyerz117 ^_^

Thank you both, very much, @foxythegamer12 and @Liquidfox !! :-D

@TheOwlAce Love the new layout and the inclusion of a turret!! You're making good use of that horsepower now.

Thousands of years later, they still use a similar design. I guess if its not broke, don't fix it? lol
@villulennuk No problem, I hope these work well for your' builds. ^_^
@TheOwlAce Oh I see! Perhaps we were on the same wavelengths as far as that matter is concerned? XD

@Pilotmario lol What do you expect of a people who were under the thumb of the Swedes and then Imperial Russia; Only to be attacked by the Soviet Union after they finally gained independence? I'd go full out one winged angel on them too! lol Thanks for the upvote!
Thanks a lot, @TAplanes !! :-D
XD
@TheOwlAce The SimpleCars update as some call it.
@Noman0rumeral Thanks for the upvote! :-)
An interesting concept, usually mirroring gets me into trouble with some unknown component or ten getting doubled or left out of the mirror for one reason or another. lol
@Johndfg May I steal those cockpits for the subassemblies bin for potential future builds?? XD
