Also you should decide a list of aircraft companies and their symbol letters.
About real ones, from memory :
- A for Brewster,
- C for Curtiss,
- D for Douglas,
- F for Grumman,
- G for Goodyear,
- H for McDonnell,
- J for North American,
- M for Martin or General Motors (AM-1, PBM / TBM),
- R for Ryan,
- U for Vought,
- V for Lockheed or Canadian-Vickers (PV-2 / PBV),
- Y for Consolidated/Convair.
So your contestants will have to choose between either B, E, I, K, L, N, O, P, Q, S, T, U, W, X, Z to represent their brand, or base their design as existing companies.
Edit : go see there for the complete aircraft companies designation letter list.
@LieutenantSOT the thing is, "P" for "Pursuit" was ONLY used in the USAAC/USAAF.
The Navy always used the "Fighter" code, even in their squadrons (VF, Vole Fighting).
Wait a min. If you want a realistic designation, take that :
- X (eXperimental)
- F (Fighter)
- Number (what plane of yours has been ordered by the Navy) (starting at 2, a "1" doesn't exist and will lead to the letters to be stuck together : ex. Ryan FR Fireball)
- Letter symbolizing your company.
Eventually, a nickname for your plane, if you have one.
Example : Grumman XF5F "Skyrocket"
- The "5" means "5th Grumman fighter to be ordered by the Navy"
- the second "F" designates Grumman.
I'm french, born in France.
My grandparents tho (mom's side) came from Spain, and fled Franco's dictatorship. Pretty sure they loved their new country since the obtained the french nationality.
