Well, ok, this is easier for me. First, you know some basic XML tricks...engine power multiplier, possibly scaling (those wings certainly don’t look like they’re 1,450 sq ft). That’s all good stuff. If you would like to take your replica builds to the next level, try the following: 1. Get rid of the atrocious autoroll. For autoroll the the degree you have it, try a slight amount of deadly weight, 50-200 lbs, on the side opposite the roll. I believe that autoroll is a mirroring problem, mostly, in that additional parts will spawn, but not be seen and throw off the lateral balance. 2. That cockpit is cool, but not accurate for the F-5. The F-5 does not have MFDs or a side stick. 3. Try custom landing gear...much better than the default. 4. You power multiplied the engines...great, but acceleration is as fast as a hyperactive squirrel that’s been shot out of a cannon. Drag reduction is a better way of achieving your top speed. Plus, 850 mph at low level probably equates to 1,500 mph at altitude, which isn’t the top speed of the F-5, which is a Mach 1.4 jet, at best.

Just wanted to throw in another piece of info for your consideration: As the F-5 was intended as a relatively exportable and cost effective jet, it's main competition was the MiG-21, which begs the question, "which one is better"? The Soviets actually evaluated captured examples and concluded it was a great jet, very capable against its intended nemesis, the MiG-21. The Ethiopians operated the Tiger against the MiG-21 in the 70s and were very successful, you can read about this little known story here.

  • Northrop F-5E Swiss Air Force 6.0 years ago

@ACEPILOT109 the F-5E "Tiger" version depicted here is actually a more sophisticated development of the orginal Skoshi Tiger F-5A/Bs, themselves really just straightforward fighter versions of the T-38; also note the A/Bs actually carried the moniker of the "Freedom Fighter", not the later "Tiger" name. Anyway, the F-5A/Bs served in Vietnam with the USAF for the trial, with the (South) Vietnam Air Force and captured versions by the People's (North) Vietnam Air Force after the war. All the F-5 versions were widely exported and used extensively by NATO, Norway, Canada, Turkey, Greece and Spain flying them in both fighter and tactical recce (reconnaissance) roles. Besides NATO, many Latin American, Middle Eastern, African and Pacific nations fly them to this day and they have a number of upgrades available these days. They're relatively inexpensive to operate, don't kill their pilots like the MiG-21 and F-104 tend to do and relatively capable for what they are. They really are a great jet.

Hmmm, the Starfighter is always a tricky subject. The NF-104 (which is the version here) was a research aircraft, no operational use and no armament. But still fun, to fly, nonetheless.

  • North American F-100D Super Sabre 6.0 years ago

So, I have yet to understand this...you set Infernos to "function=AirToAir", I'm not really sure exactly why as Infernos are the standard air to ground missile in SP; but there is probably some attribute that makes them ideal for this purpose. I tried the same trick on a rocket pod, but to no avail, the rockets stubbornly refuse to be used for air to air, in spite of the fact that in the 1950s, some air forces experimented extensively and a few deployed them as anti-bomber weapons (F-86D Sabre Dog, F-89 Scorpion, F-94 Starfire, CF-100 Canuck and F-102 Delta Dagger all were armed with FFARs).

Its clear you did some research on this one and it roughly matches the dimensions, weights and outline of the RL jet. Plus the loadout is fairly realistic. Needs trim though. Try stacking two rotators, one set on pitch and the second set on trim.

  • Mig-17 Fresco 6.0 years ago

Very nice build. I flew it against my F-100D (I see your picture above!) and it compares favorably against the real thing...turns better than the Hun, as in RL, but certainly slower. The only way for me to shoot it down is to separate using the Hun's superior speed, turn around as quickly as possible, then use the AAM. Turning fight, forget it, the Fresco beats the Hun every time. That's how the USAF evaluated the two types and that's how it plays out here, nice!

Pretty build, unique subject, kind of a nightmare to fly on account of its pitch instability. But...I could land it on the Beast, no problem and it could probably land successfully on the Tiny, though I haven’t yet tried.

  • How fast do you build? 6.1 years ago

The quality of the build is directly proportional to the amount of time and care spent. This one has taken me probably 20 hrs of building time over a couple of months, I build slowly, but this one is probably only half done.

Don’t see many old style Soviet interceptors like your Flagon...nice! Flies reasonably well, I really like some details such as the correct stance on the ground and the accurate gear doors/custom gear. Would suggest stacking two rotators in top of each other to allow one set be used for trim...but here, you are limited to 104 parts...though I would have ditched the third missile and pylon for trim! But nice build!

  • North American F-86D Sabre Dog 6.2 years ago

Nice. I would have made the horizontal tail an all moving surface, as it was on the real life Sabre Dog. That would have fixed the very slow turn rate...still need to trim? Simple, stack the two rotators for the horizontal surfaces on top of each other, one set to trim and the other to pitch.

  • Junkers EF 132 Luftwaffe Fast Bomber Project 6.2 years ago

@RedRoosterII, thanks! This is one of my earlier “replica” builds—it proved to be surprisingly popular. It presented challenges in that it was a design study, so good documentation was scarce, plus the learning curve was steep (I didn’t know at the time that I could make hinges that operated in only one direction; hence, the warning not to close the doors up into the bomb bay where they will cause the bombs to unintentionally detonate). I’m toying with the idea to rebuild this one with a better wing, sequenced landing gear doors, XML drag reduction for better performance and a better overall shape.

  • Messerschmitt Bf 109 v1.3 6.2 years ago

Also, remove some weight? This thing is already underweight as compared to the real thing, which was around 7,500 lbs, so I wouldn’t do that either. Plus the wing loading is a lot less than it would be in RL...the Bf-109 has a wing loading around 40 lbs/sq ft. I also didn’t have any trouble with shooting off my nose, though I have seen this is hit or miss depending on the user, so might be a random issue.

  • North American F-100D Super Sabre 6.3 years ago

@RedRoosterII you just measure the section you want to replicate on the “blueprint”..on the real, physical paper printout, then you just keep the compass spread at that distance, compare it against the scale on the paper. For example, you measure the picture and find out it’s a 2 meter tall part. In SP, you then replicate that piece with a 1 unit high part. The compass works just like a digital caliper, but much less complex (no batteries required)!

  • Aichi D3A1 Val (kaga Air corps version ) 6.3 years ago

Nice replica, shape and details are right on, iOS, no less. It has issues, can’t takeoff, even with the gyro on, which in any event causes so much lag it’s totally unuseable. If the gyro is off, it likes to flip over on its back. The RL prototype Val was unstable and tended to snap-roll under high G, but that was solved by the time it was operational and by all accounts, actually handled quite nicely. I wish people would realize the flight model is just as important as the looks. I do really like the technique used for the wheel pants, though.
