    @Thunderhawk lol Yea, I did indeed try that. Even mentioned it in the post you replied to :}

    Heck, I even played around with it MORE last night, after posting this and finding out the dimensions were wrong. Increased the wings to the proper width, set the height taller (only by making the Gear taller for better ground clearance), and moved the canards further forward, back, up, down.

    And indeed, as mentioned in my main post, made sure to try every possible combination of Wing Type (Symmetric, Semi-Symmetric, Flat Bottom) on main wings and the canards. Not just that but even the various segments of each wing (the back is technically 4 wings, 2 main big wings and then two itty bitty ones to make the curved tip).. It took a long time, but ultimately I had to give up as I was making zero progress :\

    @Thunderhawk Yea I did... a lot
    I forgot to mention, but there's a thin, rectangular piece of Fuselage colored bright red that's positioned roughly between the root's leading edge (mid-plane) that I set its Mass scale to 5, or maybe even 10. I spent a long time moving it around, to put the CoM higher than CoL, on the same level as CoL, forward, behind.
    Unstable, was the common result. :(
    (There's also 2000lbs worth of deadweight in the top two fuselage parts of the landing gear, just to push the CoM forward and to try and solve that weird issue of it wanting to Yaw all over the runway while taking off; removing that weight makes it Yaw even worse)
    .
    Heck, I even played around with it MORE last night, after posting this and finding out the dimensions were wrong. Increased the wings to the proper width, set the height taller (only by making the Gear taller for better ground clearance), and moved the canards further forward, back, up, down.

    Granted, it did take off slightly sooner, just before reaching the warning stripes instead of after bouncing off the grass... lol But its overall flight performance was worse. (Still liked producing more lift when flowing upside-down... I'm almost certain the key to the problem is somehow related to that...)

    The only "fix" I have left in my bag of tricks would be to add hidden VTOL Thrusters. Only reason I am reluctant to do that is because it is a real plane that shouldn't need that level of cheap tricks to get it flying well! lol
    Clearly I have done something wrong that is simply outside my level of expertise to find and resolve... which is fine, I can accept that fact. :P

  • Wiggly pitch, bad pitch 3.5 years ago

    There's more to it than this, and I don't have the knowledge yet to fully address what you're experiencing; however, I have been able to solve this in my own builds by adjusting the CoM (red dot). On jets with CoT at the rear, seems that having the CoM a bit forward of the CoL is ideal (a "bubble" in length in front of seems sufficient).
    .
    But too much weight towards the front, or too far to the front, will cause it to oscillate (wiggle) like that.

    Another cheap trick is to make two small "canards", but then hide them INSIDE the plane somewhere near the nose. I had to do that on my "QueSST" plane in order to get it to fly better.
    Hiding them inside the body won't ruin the looks, but will help counteract some of SP's physics issues.

    This kind of sounds like the question I was asking myself yesterday!
    In my case I was needing to have it so performing an action would toggle a Beacon. Specifically, if the Landing Gear is down the beacon is On, and if the gear is up the beacon is Off. (whether it's relevant, I was specifically using LandingGear input, not GearUp or GearDown since that's beyond me currently.)

    My only worry is that FunkyTrees may not even be able to define whether an AG is Enabled or Disabled... <_>

  • Should you buy SimplePlanes in 2021? 3.5 years ago

    @Walvis I'd just like to clarify a misnomer regarding your comment...

    "Quite literally, yes. Pirating is still very much not legal and morally wrong, especially when you are stealing from an indie studio."

    Pirating is stealing with the intention to redistribute and somehow profit from (either trade what you have or outright exchange for money). Conventionally speaking, this involves hijacking and direct harm of one or more innocent individuals (ie holding up a semi truck driver and stealing his goods, or a cargo vessel at sea, etc).
    However...
    Downloading something that you have to buy, for your own use, but without paying for it, is only theft/stealing. It's still wrong, and still very illegal, subjecting you to whatever your countries criminal codes are, same as if you took something physically from a retail store.
    .
    Granted, in the digital age that last part about Piracy is thankfully not exactly an issue anymore, though one could still easily say it is by pointing out the times when people have managed to obtain copies of something early because of a human error (either a slip up that allowed access for just-long-enough, or a system that has crappy security [firewall, logins, etc; missing critical patches, or software is deprecated entirely] which was simple to bypass), which such a situation could indeed cost them their job all because of digital pirate's actions.

    I am NOT saying I condone it. Nor am I making excuses for anyone. Simply that the media has mislabeled it and it's kinda like labeling a person that stole a Blu-Ray Player the same as someone that stole someone's Child.
    One is a person with questionable morals who has done something wrong, able to come back from the path they've strayed down...
    The other, is a person with either no morals or they're completely twisted, who has done something very bad, crossing a line you cannot come back from.
    (admittedly, that's a very extreme comparison, since I'd argue you could come back to the right side after a single act of piracy so long as you didn't irreparably harm anyone)

    ... "Well, that escalated quickly..." :}

    TL;DR -

    Don't steal SimplePlanes! It's worth the money to buy it, even in 2021, even with its remaining bugs and shortcomings/annoyances!

  • [V2] Custom Nozzle Afterburner Engine 3.5 years ago

    Looks great!
    I'm on a Parts-Cutting-Mission to see where I can cut them back yet retain the style and function. Already managed to cut each engine by 12 :D (Will edit this to include further findings)
    1) Savings: 12 Parts (each engine), Location: Nozzles
    The inner and outer flaps of the nozzles are both constructed with 2 parts each, except the inner row is straight only tapering down, unlike the outer ones which curve down at the tips. So I removed the small extra tip part of each inner flat, adding the length back to the main piece (making it 1.575) and setting its end dimensions to what the small piece's was (0.04x0.35).
    2) Savings: 1 to 5 Parts (each), Location: Main Fuselage
    If you remove the outer layers of fuselage and make the front Fuselage Intake 6.25 in length (painting Primary to that semi-flat dark gray) you can replace all the exterior fuselage parts. However, the small back ring would need to have its attachments all changed from those pieces, to that Intake. Since that was being done, might as well remove the forward central shaft that some of the VTOL nozzles are connected to, moving them over to the other one (in my notes that should be [for Red] ID 567's attachments moving over to ID 518)
    GRANTED... That does ssssslightly change the view from the rear when looking into the engine while it's off, so alternatively ... If you kept the -outer- most ring that the hinged rotates are connected to and moved the -inner- rings to that. Then extended the outer's length so maybe 1.5ish, shortening the Intake to 4.75, you'd still remove 4 parts and retain the rear-look.

    @MAHADI or @SledDriver Was this by any chance either of your creations? I had downloaded lots of stuff by you two, when I joined a number of years ago, due to the amazing work you did. Which is why my mind immediately goes to either of you being who could've created it...
    Or perhaps either of you might know who had made the original that I based this on...?
    (The engine pods are done in a slightly unconventional way, compared to everyone else: they use 6 axially-overlapping fuselage pieces to make the circular housing, instead of a single one set to"circle" shape. That stands out for me. It was also before "LandingGear" input was added, as it had used VTOL and AG2 to raise the landing gear.)

    @pbirb Yea, I'm limited despite there being more than ample "power" to go faster, as I feel like SP has a coded limitation on that. 750-760MPH regardless of altitude. Very strange. While that is technically > Mach 1 at 12K/ft altitude, I'm just... thinking there's something I'm missing on why that's the limit.

    Although, I did witness the game not knowing what to do with the propellers once you dial things up past "Absurd" lmao My twin hub design (8 blades each), when I set the Max Input to 5, when looking at my plane flying from the side, the engine was displaying basically 3 'rings' spinning... Because the larger diameter hub assembly was wobbling so violently it was appearing as 2 individual hubs hahah

    I got it up to Mach 3.84 (2630mph) at 30,000ft and Mach 2.05 (1560mph) at 1500ft.
    Changes I made: hanged the nose top/bottom to "Fuselage-Inlet-1" instead (and re-attached their points), then moved the chaff/flare launchers and insignia closer to the wings since they had a large gap, then swapped those round wing inlets near the cockpit, to the square version with 0.5 Height scale and nudged towards the wings and a slight nudge towards the main fuselage. Though I anticipate they did nothing, since it looks like my drag is 2811 now :}
    .
    I definitely need to figure out that flight control system! Boy that's nice...

  • Simplifying parts menu 3.5 years ago

    I get what he's saying, frankly.
    Basically, it'd be nice if every part in the menu system could just be configured in a setting file, to personalize the order they appear in.
    .
    Furthermore, it'd be nice if each engine just allowed you to define it's power and scale, without the need for XML editing (be it in actual file, or via Overdrive mod). That way we can use it as we see fit: either as a proper engine with more or less power in a bigger or smaller diameter or as a tiny detail part that has no power, such as some of us do. :)

    Personally, my OWN gripe with the menu system is that the built-in "Fine Tuner" and the "Attachments Editor" buttons aren't available in the main menu, as it's annoying having to always click on the "Move Menu" first.
    I also don't even use the built-in Fine Tuner, partly for that reason, but also because it lacks the Scale ability of the actual Mod :P I use the absolute crap out of the Attachment Editor though, so just being able to customize the menu system would be handy there as well since it'd let me put its button out on the designer screen, always there for me to click!

  • Mortal engines challenge (CLOSED) 3.5 years ago

    Here's the fix for your link:
    !https://mortalengines.fandom.com/wiki/Mortal_Engines_Wiki

    There's two ways you can type that out....
    The first way, to just make it so the underscores properly show up, is to type it like this:
    https://mortalengines.fandom.com/wiki/Mortal\_Engines\_Wiki
    (Note the backslashes in front of each underscore, that 'disables' the text formatting)
    OR, to make it into a clickable link as I did:
    [https://mortalengines.fandom.com/wiki/Mortal\_Engines\_Wiki](https://mortalengines.fandom.com/wiki/Mortal_Engines_Wiki)
    EITHER WAY, the underscores need to be disabled ("escaped") for the first part! As... I just now found out for myself :D
    .
    Which doesn't specifically have to be like that. The first part in the brackets can be any text you want. For example:
    [Mortal Instruments Wiki](https://mortalengines.fandom.com/wiki/Mortal_Engines_Wiki)
    Will produce: Mortal Instruments Wiki

    At least not in the context of having it be flyable <_> It looks fine and all, and like I can get it flying sorta, but in my efforts to get it flying properly, it breaks the laws of Unity-Physics whereby sending the plane rocketing at a few hundred thousand MPHs. That is if it's only that slow. Sometimes it tried to enter another dimension, at which point SP said "NNNnnopEE! This isn't what I signed up for, I'm out!" and crashes.

    EDIT:* Ok, it's done, this is the best I can do, and if this is still too big for the airport (this is 1/16th scale), then I can make it smaller, but it'll only be a static model! I refuse to try and get anything smaller to try and fly! lmao

  • Lockheed F-37A Super Pit Viper+ 3.6 years ago

    @ChiChiWerx Hopefully you approve of the work! :}
    To reduce the drag so much, I disabled calculateDrag on a lot of the things that were rather unnecessarily/unrealistically being calculated, such as the USAF roundels, tail-fin decorations, and a ton of internal components that were still being calculated despite.... being, well, internal! I also disabled it on all the hard-points simply to help remove some of its tendency to roll, since for some reason the physics engine refuses to considered mirrored parts as having the same drag profile... *epic-shrug* It can be lowered a bit further if the wing's leading edges are removed, but that wouldn't have been right! And disabling drag on them seemed to result in them wanting to flail about during maneuvers, which just looked horrible >_> (rather the opposite effect one would expect...)
    .
    I had to leave the Input "Max" at 5 it seemed, in order to get a 'smooth' animation on the exhaust and to keep that those beautiful mach diamonds! Though, I did re-orient the thruster nozzles inside the vectoring unit so that they looked a bit better *(I think in an update, it must've changed how they auto-orient so they looked weird)
    , and THEN I angled them so the 4 corners focused on a center point, which resulted in a great cone shape just as I had hoped.
    .
    Oh, and I fixed one that was inverted when using AG7 and VTOL, as well as set their max angle at 45deg instead of 90. Not that I'm too sure of the purpose of using their rotation for additional pitch?
    Which on that note, I'm also not sure the point of the two inner-most thrusters being assigned to "brake", given when you apply brake it throttles down, and renders them facing forward (ie reverse thrust) pointless it seems? Nevertheless, I left all of that as-is, and chalked it up to there being a reason that I was simply not understanding! :D

    Looks great! CJ's really do lend themselves to be recreated in SP very well, thanks to being A) really boxy for the most part or using simple lines/angles B) that hood, which arguably is the defining feature of Jeep CJs (or similar, like the old Toyota Land Cruisers).
    .
    My only minor critique? It's missing the rollbar :P

  • Your fix to everything 3.6 years ago

    I believe in terms of airplanes and racecars, it's called "Speedtape", "Hurricane Tape" "200MPH Tape", "500MPH Tape", etc. Since, those are designed for temporary repairs that can stick to their intended surface, even at speed. Since it doesn't do much good by falling off at 30,000ft lol
    .
    I also recently learned that even the name of "Duct Tape" is a bit of a misnomer and that it's preferred that it NOT be used on HVAC ducting, or that it be called Duct Tape due to that. The tape for HVAC Ducting with high-temp adhesive didn't even roll out (pun intended) until the late 70s, even though the tape we know and love had been around with the nickname of Duck Tape for decades prior.
    NASA has kept it in their bag of "Things Astronauts Need Just In Case" basically as long as there have been Astronauts! Though they call it simply "Gray Tape", which is more apt.
    .
    A common phrase my friends would use in reference to it, which I won't repeat here but won't be hard to figure out, was "If you can't Duck-it, ___-it!"
    In other words, if what you're trying to fix is so incredibly broken that even Duck Tape can't temporarily fix it... then it's not worth the time and throw it away/move on! :P

    @ChiChiWerx " I usually use AoA to extend SBs"
    What does SB mean in this context? (I might've missed what it's referencing, sorry...)
    .
    Also, I think the AoA you're referring to might be physics engine related, whereas what I was asking about (and edensk replying to) is an XML entry that's part of Wing surfaces. It's default is 0, and I've also tried changing it to no observable effect on performance or flight behavior. Which seems to be corroborated by what was listed in the SImpleCheats document. Granted, the document is old and updates have undoubtedly been released which might have changed it to having some impact. Similarly, it could be as you're pointing out and requires actual direct use through input scripting, and only then does it do anything... *shrug* heh

Then have the Winch cables connected to a comparatively muuuch smaller box in the middle, which houses various different guns, configured that way, but with their own Tracer colors, each set to an Action Group to be toggled as needed.
    .
    Then, through control inputs like Pitch and Roll, control the winches, thereby moving the plotter around on a huge X/Y grid. As you move, to a new point, you fire a shot with whatever color you've configured, and.... now you're drawing pixel art! :P
    .
    May need to set the bullets to zero velocity, so they stay where they are shot from, and make this entire contraption (the frame) able to move, so that once you're done drawing, you can relocate the plotter and see what you've made.... :}

    @Something5353 [Note: This post is entirely predicated on the notion that you play on a PC or Mac.] Depending on your computer's graphic's chip maker is (AMD, nVidia, or Intel are who make the actual chips), you can probably create a game profile for SP and limit its framerate (FPS) that way.
    .
    I know AMD can, at least on Windows, though it might take further behind-the-scenes tweaking to accomplish it, since it's profile only lets me set the framerate to a minimum of 30FPS (and editing the file all of these profiles is stored in, is a bit of a task, which even then whether or not it abides by setting it to "18" is an unknown!)

    However... As I typed that, there MIGHT be another way.... I don't know how likely it is to work, though.
    If you go in and edit your Settings file in notepad, which is in the folder that has the "AircraftDesigns" folder (also the Mods folder if you have any installed), you can tell it what framerate to run at (... in theory, if it works that way).
    Mine for example is: targetFramerate="65"
    You'd want to set it to: targetFramerate="18"
    Save the file and load up SP then. (Technically, I suspect Android will have a similar "Settings.xml" and have the same data in it, since mine on Windows has Phone related settings, like Gyro sensor and Touch Controls)*
    .
    Technically there's other methods to try and you can do it from the same settings file, It requires changing the Refresh Rate to 18 (the number in "Resolution" following the @ symbol; ie mine is 65Hz as defined by "1920x1080@65") and then setting "VSyncEnabled" to True. That too, should force --in theory at least heh-- the game to run at 18FPS. But even then, I am even less confident it'd acciomplish what we want! The other would be using something like "ReShade", which I imagine would have a similar framerate limiting ability... But I digress... Getting ahead of myself!
    Try that out first heh If ypu need help let me know.

    @Sadboye12 "setting it to -100 transparency will make the glass glow"
    Brilliant... I don't know enough about the finer details (ie: value limits) relating to XML modding. Clearly I just need to go back to my roots: Trial and Error, throwing caution to the wind! :P
    .
    Huge thanks for sharing that secret! I would probably never have figure it out to set it to a negative value haha
    [Also, as someone who is also a "Sadboye", I suggest not giving it any more control over you than it already has, or any more recognition through means like making it your username... Nay, instead I think you should try to spite it, say by changing it to something like Gladboye12! Of course.... that's all predicated on it not being your actual name... lol :}
    Which, if it is then, uh... ignore this and hey-look-there's-a-squirrel!

    Smol Airport needs a Smol Plane!
    Although, that might actually be much smaller than what I made... I know I had issues scaling it down that small, so I have no idea if going even smaller scale would continue to 'function' with Unity's Physics engine.
    .
    That being said, I am willing to try 1/4-scaling my 1/4 scale, if you want? lol
